This charming set consists of six late Edo-period Japanese blue-and-white porcelain dishes, each formed in an unusual shell shape and decorated with a distinctive lizard motif in underglaze cobalt blue.
The irregular shell-shaped form gives each small dish a sculptural quality, while the hand-painted lizard decoration adds a playful and unusual character. The combination of naturalistic imagery and asymmetrical form reflects the creativity found in Japanese tableware and decorative ceramics of the Edo period.
These compact dishes may have originally been used as Mamezara or Mukozuke, serving small portions, condiments, or delicacies as part of a traditional Japanese meal. Today, they can also be appreciated as decorative objects or collectible examples of antique Japanese porcelain.
The set of six creates an attractive coordinated presentation and would appeal to collectors of Ko-Sometsuke-style ceramics, Edo-period porcelain, blue-and-white ware, unusual shaped dishes, and Japanese antiques.
