Description:
Polylobed, domed covered incense burner (koro) on four curved feet, in lightly relief-glazed ceramic.
The knob/cue of the pierced lid is crowned by a Foo Lion (Fo Dog) holding a sacred ball with its cub. The body of the piece is flanked by two handles sculpted in the form of fantastical dragon heads. The principal faces feature a raised-relief scene depicting figures (a sage, a lady, and a child) in a leafy landscape with banana trees and rocks. The side flanks are adorned with geometric motifs, swastikas and fretwork (wan symbolizing longevity).
The pierced lid allowed incense to diffuse. The base bears a turquoise glazed square seal under-glaze featuring the character “福” (Fu, happiness/prosperity).
