Description from the seller
"Cat, Book and Chair" is a 100 × 70 cm painting by contemporary artist Ernest García. The work presents a simple and endearing scene: a black-and-white cat sleeps peacefully on an open book placed on the seat of a vivid red chair. From this small everyday moment, the artist builds a composition of great chromatic force and a strong graphic character.
The chair occupies the center of the work and acts as the main structural element of the composition. Its vertical and horizontal lines, reinforced by dark outlines, frame the cat and the book, making them the true narrative core of the scene. In the background, large green vegetal shapes spread across a light surface, creating an organic pattern that contrasts with the geometry of the furniture.
The palette is organized around intense reds, deep greens, coral, ultramarine blue, cream, white, and black. The contrast between complementary colors brings energy to the image, while the cat’s curled posture introduces a sense of calm and silence. The long blue shadow cast by the chair adds depth and reinforces the scene’s luminosity.
The painting combines simplified forms, visible brushwork, and wide color fields, establishing a dialogue with Fauvism and especially with the chromatic tradition associated with Henri Matisse. The presence of vegetal motifs, domestic furniture, and the free use of perspective transform an ordinary interior into a fundamentally pictorial construction.
The open book also introduces a small narrative element: the cat has chosen its pages as a place to sleep, bringing humor and familiarity to the scene. This relationship between animal, object, and domestic space turns the work into a celebration of those seemingly insignificant moments that define the intimacy of a home.
"Cat, Book and Chair" is especially appealing to collectors interested in contemporary figurative painting, Fauvism, interiors, cats, domestic scenes, colorism, nature, and modern decorative composition. The intensity of the red chair, the large vegetal shapes, and the cat’s serenity create a direct, warm, and easily recognizable image.
