(4th painting in the series “Distacco & autonomia”)
The black dot is me. I occupy the center of the canvas while, all around, a dense mass of marks continually changes direction and seems to whirl. The image recalls the eye of a hurricane: on the outside everything spins, multiplies, and agitates; in the center, however, white preserves an absolute calm. The point remains still and compact, watching what happens around it without getting swept away.
What surrounds the center is not a simple decorative pattern: it is my distinctive mark, the visual language through which I am building my identity in the art world. In this painting, the pattern is not static. The rotation is not only suggested by the meaning of the work, but arises from the technique with which I built and oriented the mark on the canvas. The individual modules change direction relative to the center and generate a visible movement that traverses the entire surface: the mark rotates and whirls around the central black point. Up close, the individual gestures emerge; from afar, their multiplication creates a compact moving mass.
This mark/language of mine was born in 2019 on the small blocks of the orders, while I was working at a bar. In moments of boredom, when there were no customers, I drew on those sheets without a precise plan, letting the gesture repeat itself spontaneously. From that experience, years later, comes the form of “Distacco & autonomia,” an open research through which I try to distance myself from external languages and influences, to build a truly mine artistic voice. It is a path that also concerns my life: the desire is to transform this language into a concrete form of autonomy and one day be able to live from my art.
In this painting, the mass of my mark represents my own artistic search. It is the art that, at this moment, is progressively invading my life: ideas, images, thoughts, and possible projects occupy my time and mental space, moving constantly around me. It is a force that attracts me and, at the same time, risks sweeping me away. Yet it is not something foreign: it is born from me, belongs to me and is part of the direction I wish to follow.
This is why the point and the mass share the same black: both belong to me. White is not an escape, but the necessary distance to stay at the center. So a question remains: am I guiding the mark, or, little by little, will the mark guide me?
BIO:
I am Pietro Fight, an Italian visual artist based in Milan. My research revolves around the writing of gesture: an abstract language made of marks, circles, filled and empty shapes that repeat and transform from one work to another. Through my paintings I try to tell my way of seeing life and my artistic path, working on the relationship between density and breath, weight and space. Each work is unique and arises from a manual process of rhythm, repetition, and ever-different variations."
