With this square-format artwork, Medsan brings together three Japanese visual mythologies: Godzilla rising from the waves, Hideaki Anno's Evangelion Unit-01 descending from the sky, and the gold background of Rinpa school byōbu screens. The crested, jagged waves directly reference Hokusai's The Great Wave off Kanagawa and the vocabulary of ukiyo-e prints. The cartouche メドサン is set in light reserve on a wavy band, bottom right, like a stamp seal.

The treatment uses a stark contrast between thick black outlines and saturated flat areas, in a woodblock print logic: each foam curl is cut out, each Godzilla scale drawn as a cut. The sky is occupied by a gold background rendered with printed motifs — arabesques, floral stippling, stylized suyarigasumi clouds — whose metallic gleam traverses the upper register and climbs as filaments over Eva's armor. The palette contrasts deep blues, turquoise and white crests against the overall violet and olive-green of the mecha, punctuated by blood-red on the kaiju’s dorsal plates and a few pink cherry blossom petals. A golden border frames the composition, and the print is presented on an old wood background that enhances the reading of a painted panel.

The mashup conveys something precise about the archipelago: the monster born of the bomb and the mech born of a generation's anxiety meet over the same sea, the sea that Hokusai painted as an untamable force. Gold, reserved for the divine in Buddhist painting, is here given to both figures of destruction — catastrophe elevated to the rank of sacred icon. The falling cherry blossoms remind us that all of this, in Japanese culture, is thought with regard to transience.

A spectacular piece that remains legible from a distance, ideal for bringing a touch of contemporary Japanese iconography to a collector’s interior attached to the bridges between classical prints and otaku culture.
