With this square-format work, Medsan brings Charizard — リザードン in the Japanese version of Pokémon — into the heart of classical ukiyo-e. The fire dragon imagined by Ken Sugimori stands on a rocky spur amid Hokusai’s The Great Wave, in front of Mount Fuji snow and the vermilion sun disk of the Thirty-six Views. The vertical cartouche on the right proclaims 火竜の咆哮, “the roar of the fire dragon,” while the left column names the creature リザードン (ドラコフュウ).

The treatment faithfully reuses the vocabulary of Japanese woodblock prints: a constant-thickness black ink contour, flat areas of color with no gradient, Prussian blue layered for the blades and their frothy edges, cream reserved for the sky. The palette remains intentionally limited — saturated orange for the body, muted teal for the wings’ sails, red for the seals, pale pink of sakura framing the scene from the upper-left corner. The sun with its irregular grain and the smoke of clouds evoke the grain of print paper and the wear of the carved block. In the bottom left, a cartouche dated 令和六年 春 — spring of the sixth year of the Reiwa era — is sealed with a red Poké Ball, in response to the flame seal placed at the top right.

The mashup rests on a clear elemental opposition: the flame-tailed against the water wall, fire against the wave, the pocket creature elevated to the rank of a tutelary dragon. By reintroducing an icon born in 1996 into the format used to depict kami and mythological beasts of Edo, Medsan reminds us that Pokémon has become a fully-fledged Japanese bestiary. The petals crossing the frame add the impermanence characteristic of the ukiyo-e: even the dragon’s roar belongs to a season.

A graphic and immediately legible piece, ideal for adding a touch of contemporary Japanese imagination to the interior of a collector who appreciates both classic ukiyo-e and video game culture. The buyer receives a unique giclée print: a pigment print on canvas mounted on a frame, numbered 1/1 and hand-signed.
