With this square-format work, Medsan translates Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa into the language of blue-and-white porcelain, between Chinese blue, Japanese Arita, and Delftware. The Louvre's most famous portrait is redrawn in cobalt, as if traced under a glaze, then traversed by the golden network of kintsugi. Two peaks of the history of taste, the Florentine Renaissance and East Asian ceramics, meet in the same medallion of light.

The rendering imitates underglaze painting: fine hatchings in cobalt ink, deep flat areas on the cloak and the headdress, white reserves for the face and the folded hands, and a few accents of iron red akin to Imari decorations on the sleeves and the edge rosettes. The Arno valley landscape becomes a shanshui of mountains, river, and bridges, surrounded by a frieze of clouds and stylized waves. The entire surface is crossed by a very fine brown tressure, on which the main breaks explode with gold leaf rendering. At the bottom of the medallion, the cartouche メドサン signs the piece in the very vocabulary of Japanese ceramics.

Kintsugi does not hide the break; it highlights it: the fracture becomes the most beautiful line of the object, and the accident, a part of its history that is embraced. Applied to the world’s most reproduced image, this gesture speaks to the truth about icons, which survive their cracks and come out more precious. Mona Lisa’s smile, split by a golden vein, has not lost any of its calm.

A dense and quiet piece, ideal for adding a touch of literate Orient and refined wabi-sabi to a contemporary interior, minimal or for a collector devoted to the dialogue between the West and Japan.
