Kendi in blue-and-white porcelain with a landscape decoration
Japan, Arita, Edo period, 17th century
Porcelain with cobalt blue underglaze decoration
H. 20.5 cm x 17 cm x 15 cm
Very nice globular-shaped kendi with a ribbed belly, fitted with a flared neck and a ribbed lateral spout, typical of Arita productions of the 17th century.
The decoration, painted in cobalt blue underglaze, depicts a mountainous landscape pierced by pines and clouds, outlined by stylized friezes at the rim.
The kendi, of Southeast Asian origin, was intended for ritual ablutions or for pouring drinks without direct contact with the lips. This type of object was widely exported by the Dutch East India Company (VOC), notably to Europe.
Condition: Good condition, small chips to the spout. No restoration. UV checked.
