【Product details】

A striking pair of Japanese two-panel folding screens from the Showa period, featuring two powerful hawks in flight with stylised pine motifs. The bold composition combines traditional Japanese decoration with a distinctly modern geometric design.

The glossy black lacquer-style front surfaces are accented with gold-toned areas and sharp silver-toned diagonal bands. Against this dramatic background, the hawks and pine needles are carefully hand-painted with raised details, creating depth and texture. Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to produce intricate designs.

In Japanese art, the hawk is traditionally associated with strength, courage, keen vision and success, while the evergreen pine symbolises longevity, endurance and steadfastness. Together, hawks and pine form an auspicious motif expressing strength, prosperity and long life.

The left screen bears the artist’s signature “壱芳 作” together with a red seal. Both screens have reverse sides finished in matt black lacquer and are fitted with modern piano hinges, giving them a clean, refined appearance from either side. The pair comes with its original storage box.

Their combination of black, gold and silver with the traditional hawk-and-pine motif gives the screens a strong decorative presence, suitable for both Japanese and contemporary interiors.

The screens are unused old stock and were kept in storage for an extended period. Although they have never been used, some age and storage related changes are present. There are slight discolorations and one small lacquer chip to the upper corner. Please examine the photographs carefully for the overall condition.
