This plant was imported into Europe after the discovery of the Americas and spread rapidly throughout the Mediterranean basin. In Italy it is widely spread in Sicily, Calabria, Basilicata, and Apulia. It is a plant characterized by broad, thick, fleshy pads (leaves) of a glaucous green color. The prickly pear produces flowers that become berries covered with spines with colors ranging from green to white and from yellow to orange and red.
