Big Ben Challenger “Dr. Key” – Vintage Estate Pipe – Made in Holland – ca. 1970s

A vintage Big Ben Challenger “Dr. Key” estate pipe, made in the Netherlands, dating approximately from the 1970s.

This is a classic billiard with a straight shank and a lightly curved mouthpiece. The original stem has been retained. Instead of the more familiar Big Ben stem marking, this example carries an unusual “TV” logo, adding an interesting and uncommon detail to the pipe.

The pipe has been carefully restored with the aim of preserving its original appearance and vintage character.

Restoration included:

* Bowl carefully reamed
* Chamber thoroughly cleaned and given a fresh protective bowl coating
* All smoke channels thoroughly cleaned
* Stem deoxidised, sanded and polished
* Tenon carefully reconstructed, restoring a secure and proper fit
* Stummel cleaned and polished
* Original factory finish preserved
* Briar finished with carnauba wax

During restoration, an earlier unstable tenon repair was discovered. This previous repair was removed and the tenon was reconstructed while retaining the original stem and its unusual “TV” logo.

The briar still carries its original factory finish and shows normal minor signs of age and previous use, consistent with a vintage estate pipe.
