Peter Dahl (1934–2019) - Expressive Landscape

This expressive lithograph by Swedish artist Peter Dahl depicts a dramatic landscape dominated by sweeping clouds, strong contrasts and energetic, gestural brushwork. The use of orange, dark brown and blue-violet tones gives the scene a powerful and atmospheric character. Rather than presenting the landscape in a purely realistic way, Dahl uses expressive lines and bold colour to create movement and emotion.


Peter Dahl (1934–2019) was a Swedish painter, graphic artist, sculptor and writer, born in Oslo and raised in Stockholm. He studied at Académie Libre in 1957 and later at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm from 1958–1963, where he studied under Lennart Rodhe.

Dahl became known for an expressive realist style, characterised by strong colours, energetic brushwork and a distinctive way of portraying people, landscapes and everyday life. His art often combined observation with humour, emotion and social commentary. He became particularly well known for his interpretations of Carl Michael Bellman’s Fredman’s Epistles, producing 87 lithographs between 1981 and 1984.
