Giuseppe Santomaso Venice 1907 - 1990
Internationally renowned artist, he began to exhibit in 1926 and after an initial figurative start delineated by still lifes, figures, landscapes, he devoted himself to post-Cubist research. In the 1950s he moved to informal abstraction defined by broad expanses of color with lyrical–informal accents. In later years his language changed, characterized by an accentuation of formal rigor and the refinement of compositions (almost geometric) as well as a return to an emotional and fantastic reality.
Numerous awards won and exhibitions: In ’39 he exhibited with the Corrente group; after the war he was among the promoters of the Fronte Nuovo delle Arti; in ’46 he participated in the movement Nuova Sezione Italiana, then the Fronte Nuovo delle Arti; in ’48 he participated in the Venice Biennale, later winning the Municipality prize; in ’50 the Incom prize; in ’51 the Esso Prize; in ’52 he became part of the Group of Eight; in ’54 he won the International Prize for Painting; from ’55 he devoted himself more intensely to graphics, participating in all the most significant exhibitions in Italy and abroad... etc.
Participates: in documenta Kassel in ’55, ’59, ’64; in the Tokyo graphic Biennale; in the IX Exhibition of Graphic Arts of Ljubljana; in the XXVI Venice Biennale; in the X Rome Quadriennale...etc.
