Description from the seller
Regulation concerning the exercise and maneuvers of the infantry of August 1, 1791. Volume 1-3 + 40 plates. In pocket format.
• Origin: The work, based on the ideas of military theorists such as the Count of Guibert, gathered the reform efforts of the late 18th century in France.
• Introduction: It was issued in the final phase of the Ancien Régime and subsequently formed the operative foundation of the revolutionary forces.
Structure of the Regulation
The handbook is divided into several progressive training stages:
• School of the Soldier (École du soldat): The individual’s basic military training, from posture to loading and handling the weapon.
• School of the Platoon (École du peloton): The first formation drills in a smaller unit to promote discipline and order.
• School of the Battalion (École du bataillon): The tactical movements of the entire battalion, including the transition from line to column and vice versa.
• Grand Maneuvers: The coordination of brigades and large formations in open combat.
Historical Significance
• Tactical Mobility: The regulation endowed the often inexperienced revolutionary armies with great flexibility and speed on the battlefield.
• Napoleonic Warfare: Napoleon’s generals used these maneuver concepts as a fixed standard for their campaigns.
Condition: Signs of wear on the cover; interior: clean and with firm binding.
