Japanese vintage metal incense container with verdigris green patina, dragon relief panels and temple-bell motifs, 14.5 cm high, 8 cm wide, 8 cm deep, weight 732 g, dating 1900–2000, in good condition with minor signs of ageing.
Description from the seller
Item Description
This is a Japanese Buddhist altar accessory shaped like a miniature temple bell (bonshō), designed to hold incense sticks or serve as a decorative incense container for home altar use. The cylindrical body is cast with traditional temple-bell motifs, including raised dot clusters (nyū/chi bosses) and framed panels featuring a relief dragon design on the front and side faces. The domed lid is fitted with a sculpted mythical-beast finial (resembling a karajishi lion-dog), and the whole piece is finished in a dark verdigris-green patina that gives it the appearance of aged bronze.
The lid lifts off to reveal a black-lacquered interior base, suggesting the piece was intended to hold incense sticks upright or serve as a small storage vessel for altar items.
This piece comes from a private Japanese household and had been kept in home storage.
Size
Height: 14.5 cm
Width: 8 cm
Depth: 8 cm
Weight
732 g
Condition
Overall condition is good with no major damage. As a piece kept in home storage, there are light surface scratches and some faint marks consistent with age and handling, most visible on the black interior base and around the lid rim. The green patina finish shows even wear typical of a decorative cast piece of this type.
