Background information
Description of the work
Underwater is a powerful and colorful painting in which Wim Izaks builds a strongly simplified, imaginative visual world from large fields of color and broad, readily applied brushstrokes. Against a bright blue background, organic shapes appear in yellow, red, dark green, turquoise and brown. The composition balances between recognizable figurative elements and abstraction.
In the center sits a large yellow-ochre form, built up from flowing, curved brushstrokes. Around it, dark and reddish-orange areas are clustered. To the right, a large dark-green form provides a strong visual counterweight. Towards the top, a nearly circular red element is sharply delineated against the intense blue.
The paint is visibly and assertively applied. Broad strokes, locally thicker layers of paint, and simply laid contours define the surface. Izaks makes the movement of the brush part of the image: shapes are not precisely outlined, but arise directly from color and gesture. This gives the painting a spontaneous and energetic appearance.
The work can be stylistically placed within lyrical abstract expressionism. The free brushwork, saturated colors, and organic, partly figuratively legible forms are defining visual characteristics. The given title Underwater provides a framework for the composition, but individual shapes are not unambiguously identifiable as specific underwater motifs.
