Description from the seller

A remarkable work by museum artist Gerrit van het Net. His work hangs in many museums such as the Stedelijk in Amsterdam.

Gerrit van ’t Net was a painter, graphic artist and monumental artist. He was trained at the academy in Amsterdam (1932–’36) under the direction of Heinrich Campendonk. He also studied with, among others, Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, J.H. Jurres and Willem van Leusden. After completing his studies, Van ’t Net spent two years in Paris, where he undoubtedly became acquainted with the latest developments in the visual arts. Van ’t Net produced paintings (portraits, figure studies), stained-glass objects, mosaics, wall paintings and sculptures in metal. His style was pluralistic: he worked in figurative, abstract and surrealistic directions. Nudity, erotic themes and sexual symbolism appear frequently in the artist’s work. Works by Van ’t Net were shown at the Venice Biennale in 1952. He was a member of, among others, De Realisten and the Onafhankelijken in Amsterdam.
