With this square-format work, Medsan brings Edvard Munch's The Scream (1893) into the world of blue-and-white porcelain, that of the great Japanese Arita platters and Delft faiences. The screeching figure of Norwegian expressionism becomes a ceramic motif, outlined in cobalt, before being crossed by the fracture network of kintsugi, the Japanese art that repairs breaks instead of concealing them. Two traditions that were never meant to cross paths are here held in a single square.

At the center, the bald silhouette presses its hands to its cheeks, mouth open in a cry that we do not hear, eyes fixed straight on the viewer. Behind it, the railing of the bridge runs diagonally toward two still walkers who saw nothing, while the image shows the fjord, a sailboat, the hills and the sky swirling in fine blue hatchings imitating the ceramist's brush. A single red streak lines the horizon and answers the red collar of the figure: these are the only deviations from a palette wholly dominated by blue on an ivory background. In the bottom-right corner, the cartouche メドサン can be read, the artist's signature in katakana.

The clear lines that traverse the scene, mimicking the lacquer of gold of-kintsugi, repair not only the background: they pass over the face itself, just under the open mouth, like a tear that has been resewn. Munch painted an inescapable anguish; kintsugi asserts that something broken, once owned, is worth more than intact. The mashup thus transforms the absolute icon of modern panic into an object reconciled with its own crack.
