Item Description
This is a decorative cast iron hanging lantern (kaido-doro style) presented on a sculptural branch-form stand, made in Japan. The lantern itself is a small pagoda-roofed cage lantern with pierced bamboo-leaf motifs on its sides, suspended by a metal ring from an elegant curling hook. The stand is cast in the form of a gnarled branch rising from a circular pierced base decorated with stylised foliage, giving the whole piece the silhouette of a lantern hanging from a tree branch.
The entire piece is finished in a dark green painted patina over cast iron, typical of Japanese garden ornaments, and the weathered surface adds to its rustic charm. It would suit both indoor display and covered outdoor garden settings, working well as a candle lantern or purely as an ornamental sculpture.
