Marc Chagall – Assuérus chasse Vasthi – SPADEM 1985 – No. 1482/3000
For sale is a high-quality, limited color lithograph after Marc Chagall (1887–1985) entitled Assuérus chasse Vasthi, after Chagall’s biblical composition from 1960.
The sheet comes from a luxury edition of 3,000 copies published in 1985. In the art trade this edition is listed as a high-quality Grano lithograph or lithographic reproduction.
On the back, this copy is clearly labeled and numbered:

The motif goes back to Chagall’s original color lithograph Assuérus chasse Vasthi from 1960, from Dessins pour la Bible, which is documented as Mourlot 251.
The vividly colored portrayal from the Book of Esther shows King Ahasuerus (Assuérus) and Vashti. Characteristic are the intense blue, strong red, green and black tones, as well as Chagall’s expressive imagery.
