Description from the seller

Marc Chagall: “Les fiancés de la Tour Eiffel, 1938”.

Signed on the plate.

Authorized color offset lithograph.
Condition: the work is in excellent condition.
Format: 80 x 60 cm.

Born in Vitebsk, Russia, in 1887, Chagall painted paintings with intensely strong light. As the son of modest Jewish parents, he left his homeland after a short study at the State Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. He first settled in Berlin, then the United States and finally in Paris in 1923.

He maintained a close friendship with Apollinaire. Chagall soon began incorporating memories of his homeland – the world of Hasidism and Russian fairy tales – into his work and blending them with elements of Fauvism.

He allowed his subjects to float in a mystic, symbolically rich setting, which had a significant influence on the German expressionists. In 1915 he married Bella, who provided the inspiration for some of his most beautiful and intimate paintings – depictions of lovers.

This artwork is "Les mariés de la Tour Eiffel" (The Bride and Groom of the Eiffel Tower) by Marc Chagall, painted between 1938 and 1939.

The painting shows Chagall himself and his wife Bella Rosenfeld as a married couple, floating on the back of a large white rooster.
The work is an autobiographical rendering of their love, in which Chagall blends his memories of their marriage with fantastical elements and dreamlike imagery.

Although the mood is dreamy, the painting was created on the eve of World War II, which symbolizes the fragile state of happiness for the couple.
The original painting is part of the collection at the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

Never been framed and stored in a dark archival storage between protective acid-free paper.
The displayed photos are part of the description.
