About François Pompon
François Pompon (1855-1933) is one of the great French figures of modern animal sculpture.
After working with Auguste Rodin and Camille Claudel, he gradually develops a very personal language, based on the simplification of volumes, the gentleness of curves, and the elimination of superfluous details.
From the early 20th century, Pompon focuses mainly on animal representation. He observes animals especially at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris and seeks less to reproduce their anatomy in every detail than to capture movement, silhouette, and essence.
His full recognition comes at the Salon d’Automne of 1922, where his monumental Bear in White (Ours blanc) meets with immense success. This work has become one of the most emblematic animal sculptures of the 20th century and one of the masterpieces of the Musée d’Orsay collections.
With its smooth surfaces and its powerful, simplified forms, Pompon’s work holds a special place in the history of modern sculpture, between Rodin’s tradition and the more radical explorations of Brancusi.
