Description from the seller
Japanese Meiji Period Lacquered Wood Charger with Mother-of-Pearl Inlay
A striking large Japanese lacquered wood charger, dating to the late Meiji period (1868–1912). The finely composed central scene depicts a palanquin procession beside the water, with hills, a pagoda, pine trees, boats and flying birds beyond. Delicately engraved golden details enrich the landscape, while the figures, architecture and shoreline are beautifully highlighted with shimmering mother-of-pearl inlay.
The broad, deep reddish-brown rim is decorated with an elegant floral branch design, creating a refined contrast with the dark central ground. An impressive and highly decorative example of Japanese lacquer craftsmanship, with exceptional visual presence.
Condition: the mother-of-pearl decoration is in very good condition. There is age-related wear, rubbing, small losses and surface marks to the wood and lacquer, particularly around the rim and underside; please examine the photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
Dimensions: diameter 45.3 cm; height 9 cm.
A superb statement piece for a collection of Japanese art, lacquerware or Asian decorative arts.
Your item will be carefully packaged and shipped with full track and trace for your peace of mind; local pickup is also warmly welcomed in Ekeren (Antwerp), Belgium.
