Splendid Italian Mastro de Paja briar pipe for collection, from a private collection, characterized by a high-quality briar, well-aged, and with an especially elegant grain, typical of the best Italian handcrafted productions of the period.

A highly charming specimen, where the quality of the briar of yesteryear represents one of the most interesting elements: the wood shows a beautiful grain structure, deep natural shading, and a warm amber tone that fully enhances the pipe’s form.

The pipe features a classic and balanced shape, with a substantial and harmonious bowl, well-proportioned to the shank and mouthpiece. The upper part of the bowl is adorned with the characteristic rusticated finish, creating a pleasant contrast with the smooth, glossy surface of the briar.

The black mouthpiece elegantly completes the set and is characterized by a distinctive circular metal insert. On the shank are visible the markings “Mastro de Paja” and “Italy,” elements that clearly identify the Italian manufacture.

Era and collector interest

Mastro de Paja represents one of the most important historic names in the Pesaro pipe tradition, an Italian city long linked to handcrafted pipe production.

The craftsmanship began in 1972 thanks to Terenzio Cecchini and Giancarlo Guidi. For its artisanal approach and attention to briar quality, the brand has over time become a reference for collectors of Italian pipes.

The offered specimen can be traced to the historical/Guidi era, roughly late seventies to early eighties. In the absence of original documentation or a specific dating mark, this dating is intentionally framed as a period attribution rather than an absolute date.

The pipe retains its original aesthetics very well, with the briar maintaining a splendid depth of color and a very pleasing grain. Minor and normal signs attributable to storage and/or prior use may be present, to be regarded as part of the object’s history.
