Description from the seller
On Dramatic Art and Literature. Lectures by August Wilhelm Schlegel. 3 volumes complete - August Wilhelm Schlegel
Heidelberg: By Mohr and Zimmer, 1809-1811. 3 volumes. Vol I: xii, 378, [2] pages; Vol II: [2], 300 pages; Vol III: viii, 429, [3] pages. 17.8cm x 10.6cm. Red quarter leather binding with green-black marbled boards, gilt-lettered spines, and green-sprinkled edges. First edition of this seminal work of literary history and theory that establishes a systematic distinction between Classical and Romantic art. Based on his 1808 Vienna lectures, Schlegel argues against the rigid "Three Unities" of French neoclassicism, proposing instead the concept of "organic form," where a work's structure arises naturally from its internal content rather than external rules.
Rubbing, bumping, and wear to the boards and spines, and tanning to the spines. In all three volumes the front free endpaper is missing. In Vol I the top outer corner of the front board is a bit damaged (see photos), there are pencil markings on the front pastedown endpaper, and there is a tear in the text part of page 287/288. In Vol II there is a tear in the text part of page 95/96. Subtle scattered pencil markings throughout in all three volumes. Browning and spotting throughout in all three volumes. The text is clear and the binding is tight in all three volumes. Overall, a set in good condition.
Insured delivery, or free local pickup available if prefered: Geneva (Switzerland) / Bonneville (France) areas.
Shipping: Fully Insured (100% ad valorem) (extra shipping costs included) with tracking number. Carefully packed parcel. Premium delivery options ; no additional shipping fees for any extra lots won in the same auction.
