Oppler, the German Impressionist painter, was one of the most important chroniclers of stage dance and bourgeois life in the interwar period. He was also one of the most outstanding graphic artists of his time. His use of fine lines, mastery of etching, and drypoint allowed him to imbue his black and white compositions with a profound sense of intimacy, elegance, and virtuosity.
