On this square format, Medsan places Totoro, the great forest spirit from the Studio Ghibli film, sitting straight facing us in a night almost black. He holds above his head a parasol shaped like a wide green leaf, the slender stem gripped in his black claws, and smiles with all his teeth, eyes wide round, ears standing up on each side. Around him, the dark, damp ground hollows into concentric circles where the rain falls.

His body bears blue decorations on a white background, scrollwork and flowers on the ears, arms and paws, while the cream belly unfurls clouds and deep blue pine trees and dark red, with waves at the bottom. A network of broad golden lines runs across the whole piece and a few glints detach near the shoulders, as if suspended. At the bottom right, the cartouche メドサン, in gold.

A calm and inhabited room, ideal for bringing a touch of Japan into a contemporary, collector’s interior attached to Ghibli culture.
