Luis Filcer (Zhytomyr, 1927 – San Miguel de Allende, 2018) was a Mexican expressionist artist born in Ukraine. He studied at the Academia de San Carlos in Mexico City and worked in 1949 at the influential Taller de Gráfica Popular. Filcer represented Mexico at international biennials and subsequently received a grant for further study in Europe.
His painting is characterized by a powerful expressionist treatment of the human figure and recurring themes such as social inequality, power relations and human conflict. Among others, Francisco Goya, Vincent van Gogh and José Clemente Orozco provided important artistic references for him. Filcer lived and worked for about twenty years in the Netherlands and exhibited both in Europe and Mexico. He was a member of the Mexican Salón de la Plástica Mexicana and received several honors during his career, including the José Clemente Orozco Medal in 1953.
