MONTBLANC SAFETY FOUNTAIN PEN NO. 2 IN EBONITE (GERMANY, 1900s/1920s):
We present at auction an authentic relic of the history of writing: the legendary Montblanc Safety Pen No. 2. This instrument, forged at the beginning of the 20th century, is a living testament to the origins of what would become the world's most famous writing manufacturer, when it still operated under the name Simplo Füllpen Gesellschaft.
With the period’s classic proportions, it measures 12.5 cm in length (closed) and 1 cm in thickness. The body and cap are turned in black ebonite (hard vulcanized rubber). Unlike many surviving units that have severely oxidized, this piece retains a very dark color and, more importantly, incredibly sharp engravings. On the cap you can see the primitive engraving of "MONT BLANC" with the mountain drawing, while the body bears the rare and coveted seal "SIMPLO ORIGINAL MONTBLANC". The dome is crowned by the emblematic white star, which wears a beautiful yellowish patina forged by a hundred years of age.
It features the ingenious "Safety" mechanism: by turning the knurled end, the splendid 14-karat solid gold nib retracts into the reservoir, allowing the cap to seal hermetically the pen to prevent leaks.
Condition (Expert Review)
Payers are asked to closely observe the photo gallery, which is an essential part of the description. The item is in an exceptional historic condition:
Ebonite and Engravings: No cracks or breaks. The engravings (imprints) are deep and perfectly legible, something extremely rare in centennial ebonite.
Mechanical: The feed and retractable nib mechanism appears operational. (Fundamental note: As is strictly customary in Safety pens over a century old, the original cork seals will be dry. Although the pen is mechanically operable, it requires the installation of a new cork seal by a professional restorer if the new owner wishes to fill it with ink and use it daily without risk of leaks through the knurled end. It is sold as a collectible piece and delivered without box).
Shipping
The item will be carefully protected and securely packed, with insured shipping and an international tracking number.
A golden opportunity for purists and Montblanc archivists to add the brand’s foundations to their collection!
