Alan Green (born 22 December 1932 in London; died 7 May 2003 in Monmouth) was a British graphic designer, painter and draftsman. He belongs to the artists of Concrete Art. He grew up in London and studied from 1949 to 1953 at Beckenham School of Art Illustration and Graphic Design. From 1953 to 1955 he served as a cartographer in Korea and Japan, where he visited the Japanese potter Shoji Hamada (1894–1978). From 1955 to 1958 Green continued his studies at the Royal College of Art. In 1958 the sculptor June Barnes and Green married. The couple had two daughters. From 1958 to 1959 Green taught at Hornsey College of Art and met Maurice de Sausmarez, John Hoyland and Brian Fielding. He taught from 1961 to 1966 at Leeds College of Art and ended his teaching career at Ravensbourne College in Kent in 1974.

The offered work is an original offset print (serigraph) by Alan Green from 1979. The deep black, square motif has a characteristic, slightly unsettled texture, with the paper showing faintly through in places. The surface is completely flat, yet the black remains intense and material. The motif is printed on heavy white graphic paper. The shown dimensions together with the wide paper margin correspond to the classic formats of his editions.

The image is a prime example of British Minimalism and Concrete Art of the late 1970s. During this phase, Alan Green explored the effects of layered color blocks, edges, and the structure of the color application.
