A traditional Echizen-nuri lacquerware box from Sabae, Fukui Prefecture, Japan, finished in black with a chinkin-incised vermilion peony motif, comprising a flat lid, an inner tray and a base, measuring 20.5 x 26 x 4 cm, unused but stored with some staining inside the lid.
Description from the seller
Item Description
This is a traditional Echizen lacquerware (Echizen-nuri) box, decorated in the "chinshu" style with a carved vermilion peony motif. Echizen lacquerware originates from the Kawada district of Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture, a region with over 1,500 years of lacquer-making history.
The box is finished in deep black lacquer as a ground, over which a chinkin (incised gold/vermilion) carving technique has been used to render large, flowing peony blossoms and foliage in bright vermilion lines. The contrast between the black lacquer ground and the fine red incising gives the surface a refined, layered appearance characteristic of high-quality chinshu work.
The box consists of three parts: a flat lid, an inner tray, and a base, all in a rectangular form with a flat bottom. It has never been used, but has been kept in home storage for an extended period, and as a result the interior of the lid shows some staining consistent with long-term storage. The exterior lacquer surface remains glossy with crisp carved detailing.
