Album in oblong 4to, percallina verde editoriale, copertina in brossura conservata, 210 pages, one map with a brief text in French on the wartime events between February and April 1897, an insert on Indian paper in color with the flags of the two belligerents, followed by 88 black-and-white photographs on the first 50 pages describing the places of the war, the uniforms, the armaments, the battlefields and the wartime events. Then, seamlessly, another 64 pages all devoted to the journey of the President of the French Republic Félix Faure (1841-1899) to Russia at the court of Tsar Nicholas II during August 1897; this state visit solemnly sealed the Franco-Russian Alliance, a fundamental strategic agreement to break France’s diplomatic isolation and lay the groundwork for the future Triple Entente. The photographs all have a double caption in French and Russian.

Then, at the end of the volume, again seamlessly, another 96 pages all devoted to dozens of magnificent portraits of actresses, comedians, opera singers and dancers from late-century Parisian theatres and cabarets such as the Folies Bergère, the Moulin Rouge and the Café Américain, including Ève Lavallière (1866-1929), Suzanne Derval (1865-1940), Germaine Gallois (1869-1932), Mademoiselle Mathilde Castéra, Amélie Diéterle (1871-1941), Émilienne d'Alençon (1870-1945), Liane de Vriès (1865-1920), Armand’Ary, Delly-Mô (Marie Salomon), La Tortajada (1867-1957), Pauline Berny, Suzanne D’Anjou, Dora Parnés, Lise Fleuron (Marguerite Marie Rauscher 1874-1960), Paulette Darty (1871-1939), Clara Ward (1873-1916), Juliette Ferny, Andrèe Raymond, Denise D’Evian, Marcelle Dagny, Rose Harrison, Marcelle de Sant-André, Alice D’Harney, Juana D’Orsel, Marguerite De Bernay, Poupette De Ruysser, Thérése De Mauriac, Henriette De Varaville, Janine De Barcy, Henriette D’Alzac, and many others.

Conditions: the cover is in excellent condition, the hinges are somewhat weakened, the pages are not numbered and on pages 19/20 there is a repaired tear without losses (see photo), while some central pages (those of the Russia journey) show creasing.

A very rare photographic account of the events preceding the Balkan Wars and the doomed decline of the Ottoman Empire, and a small delightful monument to the Belle Époque.
