An extraordinary and historically significant Japanese antique Isho Tansu (clothing and storage cabinet) dating from the landmark Taisho to Early Showa era (1920s–1930s), exhibiting authentic Taisho Deco architectural artistry.


Historical Context & The Taisho Deco Movement:
The Taisho era (1912–1926) was a vibrant golden age in Japanese history—a period of rapid cultural modernization and artistic synthesis. During this time, Japanese master craftsmen absorbed the global Art Deco movement emerging from Paris, seamlessly fusing western geometric abstraction with centuries-old Japanese woodworking traditions (Sashimono).
This cabinet is a rare, physical manifestation of that historic era. The front doors feature intricate, hand-fitted geometric wooden lattice overlays (Koshi), creating a sophisticated play of shadow and symmetry that predates modern minimalism by decades.


Structural Craftsmanship & Design:
Constructed in the functional two-part stacking style (Kasane-tansu), this monumental cabinet was originally designed for high-ranking Japanese households to store prized kimono and textiles:
Upper Section: A spacious two-door wardrobe fitted with sturdy internal paulownia shelving.
Lower Section: A functional chest comprising five drawers, retaining its original vintage metal backplates with a rich dark aged patina.

The upper and lower modules can be stacked together as an imposing tall cabinet or separated to serve as a low sideboard and matching storage chest.

Crafted from native Japanese hardwoods with a warm, reddish-brown stained finish that has aged naturally for nearly a century. Please note: The metal pull handles (loops) on the upper two left-hand drawers are missing/damaged, leaving only the original decorative backplates.
