Description from the seller
Italian briar handcrafted pipe in burled wood – an elegant specimen with beautiful natural grain
Splendid Moretti Recanati handcrafted in Recanati, Marche, belonging to the tradition of the historic manufacturer founded by Igino Moretti in 1968.
The specimen immediately stands out for the beautiful aesthetic quality of the briar, characterized by vertical natural grain lines that are very evident and regular along the body of the bowl. The smooth surface, in warm honey, amber and chestnut tones, allows full appreciation of the natural wood pattern.
The Moretti is one of the most interesting Italian artisanal realities in the contemporary pipe scene: Recanati production is historically characterized by a strong manual component, with particular attention to the choice of briar and the finishing of the surfaces. Specialist sources also describe Moretti production as characterized by classic and freehand forms, predominantly natural finishes and the use of Italian briars selected.
THE BRIAR
What strikes most in this specimen is precisely the visual quality of the briar.
The side of the bowl features a beautiful vertical grain pattern, with grain lines that elegantly accompany the development of the form. In the upper part, especially around the rim of the bowl, you can observe a natural finish that preserves the authentic character of the wood.
It is not an artificially uniform surface: the pipe retains the natural design of the briar, a particularly important element in the smoother Moretti models.
The rim of the bowl is slightly contoured and presents an irregular but harmonious finish, which contributes to giving it an artisanal rather than industrial character.
FORM AND CONSTRUCTION
The pipe presents a curved and harmonious shape, with a tall, substantial bowl, smoothly joined to the shank.
The curvature of the mouthpiece follows well the overall line of the pipe and gives the whole a balanced, classic appearance.
The glossy black mouthpiece is enhanced by the characteristic circular briar insert, a particularly interesting identifying detail of Moretti production.
The mouthpiece appears well preserved and maintains good surface sheen.
MARKINGS
On the shank you can clearly see:
MORETTI
RECANATI
This marking is particularly meaningful as it identifies Moretti Recanati production. Specialist sources also report that after 2005, the “Recanati” marking was progressively removed, making specimens bearing both inscriptions especially useful for historical framing of the production.
From the photographs, however, I do not deem it correct to attribute a precise Moretti grade group with certainty: it is not sufficiently documented by the visible marking, so I prefer not to invent a classification.

COLLECTOR INTEREST
The Moretti Recanati occupies an interesting position in the history of Italian artisanal pipes. The brand was founded in 1968 by Igino Moretti and continues to this day the tradition of artisanal work in Recanati.
The particular combination of:
- historical brand + artisanal craftsmanship + beautiful briar + MORETTI RECANATI marking + very good condition
makes this specimen particularly suitable for a collection dedicated to Italian artisanal pipes.
As a market reference, a recent Catawiki auction for a smooth Moretti Recanati reported an estimate of €150–200, albeit with a much lower final bid (€31), proving how auction result can depend on starting price, presentation and the number of bidders.
VALUATION OF YOUR SPECIMEN
For this pipe, considering 148 mm in length, 64 g of weight, the beautiful flame briar, the Moretti Recanati marking and the excellent condition, I would propose:
ESTIMATED VALUE: €130 – 180
Catalog recommended value: €160
