The lithograph was published in 1979 in the collector’s folder 'Fuga' by the publisher 'De Volle Maan'. The complete folder always contains copies of Summer 1 and 2, Spring 1 and 2, Winter 1 and 2, and Autumn 1 and 2. This lithograph is named: Autumn 2.

Signed and numbered in pencil on 300 copies. This lithograph is accompanied by a haiku written by Hugo Claus (see photos).

The work is signed and also numbered by Hugo Claus.

EXTRA INFORMATION ABOUT HUGO CLAUS:

Hugo Claus (1929–2008) was one of the most important and versatile artists in the Dutch-language world. He was born in Bruges (Belgium) and grew up in a Catholic boarding school, an experience that would later have a major influence on his work. Claus was active as a novelist, poet, playwright, film director, painter and draftsman. His oeuvre is characterized by pronounced vitality, erotism, social critique and a continual search for freedom against religious and bourgeois conventions.

In the fifties he joined the experimental art movements of his time and maintained close contacts with avant-garde artists. As a writer he finally broke through with the monumental novel The Sorrow of Belgium (1983), in which he investigates collaboration, Catholic upbringing and Flemish identity during World War II. This work is considered a high point of Dutch-language literature of the twentieth century.

In addition to prose, Claus also wrote influential plays and poetry collections, often permeated with mythical motifs, sexuality and irony. He also directed films, including The Sacrament, and remained active throughout his life as a visual artist.

Claus received numerous literary prizes and was repeatedly named a candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature. He died in 2008 in Antwerp by euthanasia, after suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. His legacy is regarded as exceptionally rich and influential: Hugo Claus is regarded as a cultural giant who deeply shaped Flemish and European art and literature.
