Description from the seller
This bronze sculpture shows a young, naked figure seated in a calm and restrained posture on a rocky surface. The head is bent downward and the legs are elegantly crossed, giving the sculpture a sense of stillness and contemplation. The refined modeling of the body contrasts beautifully with the rough texture of the pedestal. Due to the dark brown patina, the lighter reflections on the face, the shoulders and the legs stand out even more, emphasizing the shapes of the body. The natural stance and the careful execution give the sculpture a sensitive and intimate appearance.
Rachel van Dantzig (1878–1949) was a Dutch sculptor who became best known for her figurative sculptures. She worked in a period when female artists within sculpture were still relatively little visible. In her oeuvre Van Dantzig focused, among other things, on human figures and portraits, with careful observation of posture, anatomy and character central. Her work aligns with the figurative sculpture tradition of the early twentieth century and is characterized by a natural form and an understated expression.
