Apple iMac G3 “Ruby” – Personally Restored by Les iMacs de Remy

I’m Remy, the collector behind Les iMacs de Remy. I restore these computers myself, from the first disassembly to the final tests. What I enjoy most is seeing an iMac regain its colour, its sound, and its character after years of use—or years spent forgotten in storage.

This iMac G3 Ruby has been through that process on my workbench. Its translucent red shell is a reminder of what made these machines so distinctive, and why I still enjoy working on them today.


Hardware

This iMac originally had a 450 MHz motherboard, which I replaced with a 500 MHz version during the restoration. It now features a 500 MHz PowerPC processor and 320 MB of RAM, offering an authentic vintage Macintosh experience.
I want to make this replacement clear: the motherboard is no longer the one originally fitted to this machine. There is a small bonus, though: the replacement brings an approximately 11% increase in processor clock speed, from 450 MHz to 500 MHz.


The restoration

I started by fully disassembling the computer so I could clean it inside and out and inspect the hardware before carefully putting everything back together.
I performed a fresh installation of Mac OS X 10.3 Panther using genuine Apple installation CDs. The operating system is installed in English. I then configured the system and thoroughly tested the computer’s functions.
I carefully polished the entire translucent Ruby shell to restore its lustre and remove many of the scratches accumulated over the years. This has considerably improved its appearance, while preserving its original character. However, some small scratches remain: the shell is well cared for, but it is not in flawless or as-new condition.

The CD drive eject mechanism, a common trouble spot on iMac G3 computers, has been repaired to restore smooth and reliable disc ejection.

I also restored the original Apple speakers, replacing their deteriorated diaphragms and surrounds with new ones. They have been tested and now deliver clear sound without distortion.


Original accessories included

• Original Apple Pro Mouse, model M5769

• Original Apple Pro Keyboard, model M7803

• Genuine Apple power cable, white with transparent connectors

• The iMac’s original box, with both original polystyrene packing inserts, in the condition described below

I fully disassembled the keyboard, cleaned it inside and out, restored it, and carefully reassembled and tested it. Please note that the rubber feet underneath the keyboard, along its rear edge, are missing. These are the small rubber pads on which the keyboard rests; their absence does not affect normal use.

The mouse was carefully cleaned without being disassembled, and its operation was tested. These accessories are part of the experience, and I wanted the whole set to feel complete and well cared for.

Original box
The iMac comes with its original box. The box shows considerable wear and damage, but it still contains both original polystyrene packing inserts. I wanted to keep these together with the computer as part of its history. The box should not be considered a pristine collector’s item.


Condition and transparency

Every photograph in this listing shows the actual computer and accessories you will receive. I take new photographs for each restoration; I do not reuse pictures from previous sales.

Although I have put considerable care into this iMac, it is still a vintage computer, and some signs of age remain, including small scratches on the shell despite the full polishing. Please look closely at the photographs, which show its condition in detail.

One of the six internal mounting tabs securing the outer shell is broken. It is barely visible when the computer is assembled and does not prevent the shell from fitting properly or remaining securely mounted. I have included a photograph of the damaged tab so you can assess it before bidding.


A personal project

I approach each restoration with the care I would give a machine in my own collection. I enjoy the small details: bringing back the shine of the case, getting the disc mechanism working properly, and hearing the speakers play clearly again.
That is what Les iMacs de Remy represents: computers I have personally worked on, tested, and taken the time to present honestly.

I hope this Ruby finds a home with someone who will enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed bringing it back to life.

The iMac and its accessories weigh approximately 17 kg in total. For shipping, please allow an additional 2-3 kg for protective packaging materials.

Shipping is available for international buyers and other destinations. I will pack the computer with extensive protective materials, using the same packing method I have successfully used for previous sales. Please refer to the feedback and comments from previous buyers.

I offer personal home delivery throughout Belgium, allowing me to handle the machine carefully and bring it safely to your door.

Local pickup at my home is also possible.
