The original Jean-Michel Basquiat's 'Self-Portrait', spread over three hinged wooden panels, shows two black silhouettes.
The silhouette on the right panel overlaps a sheet with song titles from Thelonious Monk's 'Blue Note Sessions'.
On the left panel, in a square, the name of jazz tenor saxophonist Ben Webster is repeated.
Basquiat incorporated references to jazz musicians in his artwork because he recognized that jazz music was also an important form of creative expression.
