An iconic First Growth (Premier Cru Classé) Bordeaux Classification. Produced in the legendary Pauillac appellation, this vintage is highly coveted by collectors, featuring a unique label designed by the German neo-expressionist artist Georg Baselitz.

Vintage: 1989 was a remarkably hot and dry year across Bordeaux, which resulted in the earliest harvest of the 20th century at Mouton Rothschild, spanning from September 6 to September 25. The intense summer heat allowed for massive sugar accumulation and rapid phenolic ripeness. While its neighbor Château Haut-Brion produced a legendary 100-point wine this year, Mouton’s early-harvested grapes created an atypical, leaner, and more "old-school" style that took decades to soften.

Vinification & aging: Hand-picked grapes were thoroughly destemmed and vinified in separate traditional oak vats calibrated to individual vineyard parcels. In strict adherence to First Growth tradition, the wine was matured for roughly 20 months in 100% brand-new French oak casks. It was topped up regularly and clarified traditionally using fresh egg whites.

Blend: 78% Cabernet Sauvignon - 14% Cabernet Franc - 8% Merlot

Tasting Notes:
Now fully mature, the 1989 Mouton Rothschild has settled into its plateau of maturity, delivering a textbook, highly savory Pauillac experience.

Appearance: Deep garnet-crimson core with noticeable bricking or amber accents on the rim.

Nose: Richly expressive and aromatic. Upfront scents of cedarwood, cigar tobacco, and graphite are tightly layered against eucalyptus, leather, and dried black currants.

Palate: Medium to full-bodied. Time has resolved the massive, aggressive baby tannins into a grainy, silky texture. It balances savory flavors of mocha, dark chocolate, and smoked meat against a core of tart plum and cassis fruit.

Finish: Long, structured, and decidedly dry, displaying a leafy, peppery herbal quality that splits opinion between classicists and fruit-forward drinkers

Freshly picked blackberries turn into minty dark chocolate and oozing caramel with domineering eucalyptus on the nose. It becomes yet more complex on the palate thanks to layers upon layers of spices and sage plus fat and rounded tannins. There's a long finish with a bitter aftertaste, suggesting this could do with another 10 years or more of bottle aging. This is a Mouton I found massive at the time, then elegant and slightly austere years later, but today true to its former glory. Like the amazing 1947, it should not be forgotten.

Notably dark ruby with a blackish tinge. Dense, exotic cassis nose. Lots of ripe fruit but no obvious sweetness. Clearly a very fine, long-living wine. Attractive freshness on the finish. Very persistent. No hint of tiring or furry, indistinct fruit - unlike some 1989s. Complex classic claret. No hint of modernism. Attractive spicy note on the end. Very neat.
