Armando (1929-2018) - De Boom

Very beautiful work by Armando on nicely thick Arches paper. Fully signed and dated. Size of the aluminum frame is 67 by 51 cm, inside matting 50 by 37 cm. Of this work only 15 copies are known. This is number 11 of 15; the Rijksmuseum has number 13 in its collection.

Armando (1929–2018), born in Amsterdam as Herman Dirk van Dodeweerd, was a versatile Dutch artist: painter, sculptor, writer, poet, and violinist. His work was strongly influenced by his youth near Camp Amersfoort during World War II. In his paintings a sober, dark visual language often returns with themes such as guilt, memory, and landscape. Armando was co-founder of the Nul movement and later active in Germany. His work can be found in various museums such as the Stedelijk Museum and Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
