Netsuke of ivory by CHOKARO SENNIN, Japan, Edo Period, certified in the 18th century
Finely carved ivory netsuke representing Chōkarō Sennin, one of the Taoist immortals, standing with his head slightly raised, while bearing on his shoulders the large pumpkin-shaped vessel (hyōtan), a characteristic attribute of the character.
The sennin is depicted wearing a robe decorated with mugwort leaves (yomogi), holding a fully blossomed flower in both hands. The face, with a cheerful and slightly mischievous expression, shows a broad smile with the teeth visible, while the beard, hair, and the folds of the clothing are treated with deep, expressive carving.
The composition is markedly vertical and presents an interesting play of volumes between the figure, the large pumpkin, and the clothing elements. The himotoshi, arranged asymmetrically, are located on the back.
The ivory shows a natural honey-yellow patina, smooth and uniform, with attractive superficial aging.

Condition: very good, with surface wear appropriate for its age and small natural age cracks.
A piece of considerable sculptural presence, characteristic of the Japanese ivory netsuke tradition.
