At the end of the nineteenth century the Italian master of arms Luigi Barbasetti, heir to the teaching of Giuseppe Radaelli, played a decisive role in the diffusion of the modern sabre.
Based in Vienna in 1894 where he founded the Austro-Hungarian central fencing school before teaching at the military academy of Wiener Neustadt, he contributed to make the Italian method shine across Europe.
His teaching durably influenced the Hungarian school, which perfected this technique through more refined use of the fingers and wrist and dominated international sabre competitions for more than half a century.
