Upper Ten – Vintage Long-Shank Estate Pipe – Netherlands – c. 1960s–1970s
A distinctive vintage Upper Ten “Riviera” estate pipe with an unusually long and elegant shank, dating most likely from the 1960s–1970s.
Upper Ten was a well-known name during the heyday of pipe smoking in the Netherlands. From the early 1950s, Upper Ten pipe tobacco was produced by the historic De Pool tobacco factory in Hoorn and distributed throughout the country. Period advertising from 1960–1970 preserved by the Amsterdam Pipe Museum specifically promotes both “Upper-Ten tobacco” and “Upper-Ten pipes”, confirming that pipes carrying the Upper Ten name were commercially sold during this period.
Today, Upper Ten pipes are encountered relatively infrequently, making this an uncommon surviving relic of Dutch pipe-smoking culture.
The pipe has been completely and carefully cleaned and restored, with respect for its age, original character and history. The briar was progressively hand-sanded while preserving the original shape and stampings.
A traditional contrast-staining technique was used to enhance the exceptionally attractive grain: a dark base stain followed by translucent warm brown and subtle reddish tones. The stummel was then polished and finished with carnauba wax, producing a deep lustre without obscuring the natural character of the briar.
The stem was thoroughly restored, sanitized and polished, with its original Upper Ten emblem carefully preserved.
The result is a highly presentable vintage estate pipe with striking grain, an unusual long-shank design and an interesting connection to the golden age of Dutch pipe smoking.
