De Contortionist - 1957 - Vintage gelatin silver print, SIGNED, on verso signed in pencil and stamped with the photographer's copyright stamp, paper size: 45 x 34 cm, image size: 31 x 29 cm.
Provenance: Directly from the artist by the present owner.
Aart Klein joined the photo agency Polygoon in 1930 as an administrative employee. Although he never had formal training, he rose in the nine years that followed to become one of the agency's most important photographers. Afterwards Klein was at the cradle of the agency Particam and taught at the Utrecht Academy.
Approach
The work of Aart Klein is very graphic. He pared his images down until only lines and planes remained. In the darkroom he used all technical means to enhance the contrast and thus bring the graphic aspect of the images to the foreground. This purifying approach by Klein evokes memories of the evolution toward abstraction in the work of his countryman Piet Mondrian. In both artists the figurative was increasingly pushed to the background, in favor of the clear line and the well-defined plane.
