Description from the seller
Hans W Sylvester is an independent professional photographer and a German environmental activist, born October 2, 1938 in Lörrach, Germany. With a career spanning more than sixty-five years, Hans Sylvester has built a rich and singular body of photographic work. While his color work, notably in Ethiopia, is widely recognized, his early black-and-white photographs remain more obscure. This photograph, a mounted print on Dibond, is signed by the artist on the back.
From the Retour de Voyage gallery in L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue to Marlborough Gallery in New York, from the Angkor Photography Festival in Cambodia to Valencia in Spain, from La Gacilly to Montier-en-Der, not to mention Paris, the list is long, as are his numerous publications. Consult the sites; they will provide you with very informative information.
From the 1980s onward, Hans Silvester directed his work toward environmental activism. He photographs all of Europe’s natural parks, denounces the ravages of deforestation in the Amazon, publishes a long report on the Calavon River under the title “The Killer River,” and takes an interest in forest exploitation in North America.
At once a wildlife photographer—pigeons, Camargue horses, birds, cats, dogs...—he is also the photographer of a singular tradition: pétanque, scarecrows, kites...
A photographic record of the life of desert women and another on the peoples of the Omo Valley allowed him to recently publish “Pastorale Africaine,” prefaced by Pierre Rabhi.
