“At Verna, drawing is a spinal column that keeps everything else upright: photography, cinema, music, tattoo, mask, facial expression, and gaze. It is in the precisely elaborated gesture of drawing that he has found a complex form, arising from a process of folding memory and surfacing of the present. For him, drawing is a teaching, a continuous training of which he is both pupil and master. For Verna is an exemplary pedagogue, convinced that academicism is an uncharted belt of transmission, a form of subversion. In his work, drawing undergoes extremely sophisticated processes of copying and movement: from paper, it first goes to tracing, then to photocopying, where it is enlarged and somewhat degraded. This photocopy is then rubbed with trichloroethylene to be transferred onto walls, old papers, or fabrics, before being redrawn with black charcoal, colored pencil, and kohl eyeliner, sometimes with ornamentation elements added – black stones, rhinestones, feathers, garlands."

Jean Luc Verna benefited from a solo exhibition at MAC/VAL in Vitry-sur-Seine in 2016 and more recently at the Fondation Salomon in Annecy.
