Sanyo, MSX PHC-33 - Computer

The Sanyo PHC-33 MSX belongs to Sanyo's PHC (Personal Home Computer) family.

The main difference compared to other MSX models with 64 KB of RAM is the built-in cassette, with playback and saving—though not fast-forwarding or rewinding—controlled by hardware. Thus, pressing play won’t move the tape unless a load command is entered (load "cas:" or cload "" or run "cas:").

Another feature of the PHC-33 is a high-speed tape loading mode (twice the normal speed), selectable with the switch located to the left of the cassette.

This is a Japanese unit, so it runs on 100V AC 50/60Hz. I used an Aliexpress transformer (not included) 220V → 110V AC. The video output is NTSC, but it can be viewed fine on a VGA monitor via a composite video tuner from Aliexpress (not included).

It is in fairly good condition, though it has some small scratches from use.

The keyboard works OK—not perfectly, as is common with these old machines. On many keys you have to press harder for it to register.

I tried loading a tape (Enable), and it read the game's splash image, though it later failed. I’m not sure if the tape is at fault (likely for a cassette over 40 years old) or if the PHC-33 has its memory slots placed in unusual locations. If my memory serves, this could be fixed by performing a few pokes before loading the game.
