An expressive Japanese Hannya Noh mask, finely carved from wood and decorated with traditional polychrome pigments, gold-painted eyes and horns, and gold-colored detailing.

The Hannya mask is one of the most recognizable masks used in Japanese Noh theater, representing a woman transformed by intense jealousy, anger, and sorrow. Its dramatic expression combines sharp horns, metallic eyes, an open mouth, and powerful facial features. Depending on the viewing angle and lighting, a well-carved Hannya can convey different emotions, ranging from rage and menace to sadness and suffering.

This example is carefully hand-carved and colored, with the gold eyes and horns creating a particularly striking visual effect. The reverse bears an artist’s inscription/signature and red seal, adding further interest for collectors and providing useful details for further study of the maker.
