Gabriele Dell’Otto (Rome, December 20, 1973) is an Italian comic artist and illustrator. His career over the years has encompassed various expressive fields, from scientific illustration to American superhero comics, including calendars, lithographs, books, graphic folders, magazine covers, and video game covers. After completing compulsory schooling and earning a diploma in artistic studies, he enrolled at the European Design Institute. For about three years Dell’Otto worked on products for Italian publishing houses at a Scientific Illustration studio in Rome. In 1998, at a Roman comic convention, he submitted his portfolio to the attention of Marco Marcello Lupoi, responsible editor and Marvel Italia editor, which marked a turning point for the young Roman artist. He began collaborating with Marvel's European division (covers, posters, lithographs for Italy, France, and Germany).

In Germany he began collaborating also with the other major American comic publisher DC Comics and with various publishers (IPP, Egmont Eapa, MG Publishing). In just five years he produced a considerable number of works thanks to the support of admirers and promoters of his work such as Tony Verdini (Panini Germany), Sebastien Dallain and Pier-Jean Rebotton (Panini France).

For two consecutive years (2002 and 2003) the Carabinieri corps entrusted him with creating the images for the Historical Calendar.

In 2002, at the Angoulême Festival in France, he met David Mack, who offered to present the Italian illustrator’s work to Joe Quesada, Marvel Comics’ chief supervisor, who then gave him his first assignments. The work that made him known to the general public is the miniseries Secret War, with scripts by Brian Michael Bendis. This miniseries was reprinted in Italy also as the fifth volume of the Superheroes – Great Stories series, a Giro d’edicola (newspaper stand insert) of La Gazzetta dello Sport, on April 20, 2009.

In 2004 a color art folder featuring illustrations of horror literature characters was published by S.C.M Edizioni. In 2006 he drew the official image for Mantova Comics, the comic fair’s first edition. Also in 2006 he created the cover and all promotional images for the Italian version of Activision Marvel: The Great Alliance video game.

In the same year he painted, on pencils by Dave Gibbons, the cover of Watchmen: 20 Years After, a collection of twelve essays published to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Alan Moore’s masterpiece. Between 2006 and 2007 Gabriele Dell’Otto painted all the covers for the Annihilation saga, focusing on the cosmic characters of the Marvel universe. In May 2007, on the occasion of the Torino Comics event, the illustrated volume Tales was presented by S.C.M Edizioni, in which the dark and horrific moments of traditional fairy tales are depicted through a series of pencil drawings.

In November 2007, on the occasion of the Lucca Comics & Games comic show, a graphic folder containing 5 illustrations on the theme “Cyborgs” was presented, with an introduction by horror author Andrea Cavaletto.

In 2008 he illustrated some covers for the Ultimate X-Men series.

In 2015, during a meeting in Rome about Dante’s Divine Comedy, he met lecturer Franco Nembrini, with whom he embarked on a collaboration for a project concerning Dante’s work itself. In 2018 Mondadori published the first of three volumes, Inferno, which, alongside Franco Nembrini’s commentary on the work, includes 34 illustrations by Dell’Otto—one for each canticle of the Inferno—followed, respectively in 2020 and 2021, by the remaining two volumes Purgatorio and Paradiso.
