Suggestive urban view overlooking the water, characterized by a highly sensitive atmospheric rendering. The artist builds the composition with a free, vibrant brushstroke, in which the city's profile emerges from the haze with muted gray-pearl, greens and blues tones. Water occupies much of the scene, reflecting the diffuse light and helping to create a sense of quiet and suspension. The work reveals affinities with Italian tonal painting of the late 19th century and with the Impressionist explorations devoted to light and atmosphere. The richly carved wooden frame, contemporaneous or slightly later, completes its important decorative presence.
Critical consideration
